Code Examples

Polars

This table is so large that you should explicitly enumerate and cast every column, which will speed things up and prevents some errors. Although some of the datatypes are inferred, so they may be wrong. In particular, UInt16 vs UInt8 vs Int16 etc. If you get errors, you can swap these for just int.

This code deduplicates for you. Deduplication is normally only required across multiple months.

This code assumes that all columns are present, which may not be true for older files.

Availability

Visibility: Private & Public Next-Day

This table is in the public monthly MMSDM archive.

I have collated the list of all those files into one place, in this CSV metadata file. (Columns year, month, url, compressed_size in bytes).

Tip

There are multiple files per month, because this is such a large table.

The earliest available data is month 3 of 2021. The most recent available data is month 9 of 2026.

Every month in between has at least one file.

Warning

The filenames of zips may not correspond to the tables. These can be mixed up with BIDPEROFFER. Check column 2 and 3 inside the CSV against REPORT_NAME and REPORT_SUBTYPE to be sure. I have already done this for you, and listed all URLs in this metadata file.

Data Size

Each year of data is approximately 212 GB when zipped, 2 TB as unzipped CSV.

Warning

This table is extremely large! Simply calling pd.read_csv() will probably require more memory than your laptop has. You probably need to use a cloud service, or at least a large server. (Doing it on a laptop is possible, but very hard.)

Querying this table for more than a few months of data is a hardcore endevour. Ask your local data engineer for help. Strategies include:

  • predicate push-downs
  • lazy queries
  • hard-coded schema (e.g. the hard-coded enums and categoricals in the Polars code sample above)
  • partitioning by DUID, year etc

Deduplication and PDR Loader Configuration

The primary keys are:

Tip

Bid deduplication is particularly tricky. See the guide.

The transaction type is "insert", which means that you will usually not see duplicate data. If you do, you can deduplicate based on the primary keys, without sorting first. Rows from different files with the same primary keys should have the same values.

PDR Loader configuration is:

Report Name Report Subtype Version Undisclosed
BIDS BIDOFFERPERIOD 2
BIDS BIDOFFERPERIOD 3
BIDS BIDOFFERPERIOD_SPARSE 1
BIDS BIDOFFERPERIOD_SPARSE 2
OFFER BIDOFFERPERIOD 1 ⚠️

Warning

Some of these file mappings are not in the published PDR Loader configuration file, even though files for this table exist with those metadata values. Mappings marked with ⚠️ have been added by me after manually inspecting those files.

This means that the CSV files start with metadata columns:

D,BIDS,BIDOFFERPERIOD,2,...

or

I,BIDS,BIDOFFERPERIOD,3,...

or
