CO2EII_RESULTS_SUMMARY

This table contains contain CO2 emissions and emissions intensity information, per day per region.

Warning

This table is missing from AEMO's documentation. The information here is my best guess from looking at the data.

Column Schema

CONTRACTYEAR

Billing year

Warning

This may not match the year of SETTLMENDATE. Billing years may be misaligned near the year start/end. e.g. SETTLEMENTDATE 2025/12/28 00:00:00 has CONTRACTYEAR of 2026

SQL Type: NUMBER(4,0) Polars Type: pl.UInt16

This column is mandatory, and a primary key.

Example: 2026

REGIONID

Region of emissions.

Warning

Unlike most tables with a region column, this may include NEM, which is the sum of all other regions for that day.

The SQL type is VARCHAR2(4). This is actually a factor/enum, with values:

  • QLD1

  • VIC1

  • TAS1

  • NSW1

  • SA1

  • SNOWY1

This column is mandatory, and a primary key.

SETTLEMENTDATE

Date of emissions.

Warning

Despite what the name suggests, this is a datetime, not a date.

SQL Type: DATE Polars Type: pl.Datetime()

This column is mandatory, and a primary key.

Example: 2026/01/20 00:05:00

Note that AEMO represents dates as datetimes with a midnight time component.

WEEKNO

Billing week

Warning

There may be more than 52 billing weeks in a year, depending on which day of the week the year starts on.

Warning

There may be 53 weeks in a year, depending on how weeks align to the year start/end.

SQL Type: NUMBER(2,0) Polars Type: pl.UInt8

This column is mandatory, and a primary key.

Examples: 1, 52, 53

CO2E_INTENSITY_INDEX

Ratio of emissions to energy (tonnes CO2e per MWh)

SQL Type: NUMBER(1,4) Polars Type: pl.Float64

This column is mandatory (but not a primary key).

TOTAL_EMISSIONS

Ammount of emissions (CO2 equivillent, tonnes)

SQL Type: NUMBER(8,8) Polars Type: pl.Float64

This column is mandatory (but not a primary key).

TOTAL_SENT_OUT_ENERGY

Amount of energy (MWh) generated in this region.

Warning

This this table is undocumented, it is unclear how transmission and distribution losses, and rooftop solar, are treated.

This column is mandatory (but not a primary key).

Code Examples

Polars

Casting is enums, categoricals etc is not essential, but may speed up parsing. Swapping int for pl.UInt16, pl.Int32 would also speed up parsing. However some of the datatypes are inferred, so they may be wrong.

This code deduplicates for you. Deduplication is normally only required across multiple months.

This code assumes that all columns are present, which may not be true for older files.
